The OBNP was established by the Parliament Resolution No: 29 dated April 14, 2000 with totally 415752 ha area that was divided into parts “A” and “B” included territories of Dadal, Binder, Norovlin, Bayan-adraga Soums of Khentii Aimag and Bayan-uul Soum of Dornod Aimag. As it supports forest steppe landscape and its composition and specific ecological functions and is a home to a number of rare and endangered forest and boreal coniferious forest birds in Mongolia and the globally endangered birds e.g. White-naped crane, Black crane, and Great bustard and a number of acquatic Asian species, Onon Balj was taken under the State protection as a National Park, to protect the biodiversity and its genetic funds and develop environmentally friendly tourism based on natural and historical sites
